Chapter Fifteen

ELISA WAS AT THE DOOR when they arrived and watched as one of the footmen carried Serena inside. She motioned for him to take her to her room but she didn’t follow as she waited for the men to enter. The longer they took the more she realized something was wrong.

Then Sam and Wesley stumbled inside with Jackson slumped between them. She gasped as she saw the dagger in his shoulder.

Sam saw her, “It’s not as bad as it looks and the dagger is still there to keep his blood in him. Shall we. I assume you had them take Serena to her room. Jackson’s room is just across the hall, Gabe went for the doctor.”

They moved to go upstairs and she followed them then allowed them privacy to settle Jackson in his room. She stepped into her daughters room and gasped as she saw Kate and Tabitha cleaning blood from her face and neck. They had her stripped to her chemise but even that was decently soak in blood from wounds on her face and a gash just below her left ear.

She moved closer but didn’t help the other women, she sank into a chair and Tabitha glanced over, “We have this, relax. Where are the men?”

“Taking care of Jackson, he’s got a dagger in his shoulder and his left hand is wrapped and bloodied. I didn’t notice if the other three were hurt.”

Tabitha smiled slightly, “You have a right to be worried more about Jackson than the others. Just rest, we will take care of Serena. It’s not as bad as it looks, I’ve—well, I’ve had worse. I know it’s not me that injured but she will be fine.”

Eliza choked on tears and stood, “I need to be somewhere else. Please let me know when you get done.”

She stumbled from the room and sank to her knees in the hallway. Soon strong hands were lifting her and she raised her face to meet Sam’s eyes, “It’s alright, she’s a Newbold. We found her in time.”

She shook her head and allowed him to pull her into his arms, “Who did this? Did you catch them?”

“There was only one man there when we arrived. He attacked Jackson and met his end. None of us recognized him, but we found some things that we plan to look over and see if there are any answers there in the morning. Serena and Jackson are the priority right now.”

Eliza stepped back and glanced across the hall, “Will he be alright?”

Sam smiled, “Yes, Taylor and Doc are already working on his shoulder and hand. Then Doc will check on Serena. We felt that Jackson needed him first. Serena was in good hands with Kate and Tabitha.”

She nodded and moved from him to the door in Jackson’s room, “Can I go in?”

Sam nodded, “He’s not got anything on his upper half but I think you are fine. I’ll check on Serena.”

She nodded then pushed into Jackson’s room just as a loud moan came from
